With people in the United States alone spending billions of dollars on multivitamins and vitamin supplements every year, it’s no secret that they are quite popular. However, many scientists and experts have argued about their authenticity, suggesting other methods to prolong life such as fasting and a proper diet.

Multivitamins are Effective
There are tons of studies carried out that have suggested the effectiveness of multivitamins but have also stressed that it’s not really necessary to have them unless you really need it. It’s all about your current health condition. Having these supplements if you really are suffering from a vitamin deficiency or any condition that warrants these will prove to be effective.
But that doesn’t mean you should consider these as replacements to their natural counterparts such as fruits and vegetables. Many experts such as Susan Taylor Mayne, a professor at the Yale School of Public Health’s Division of Chronic Disease Epidemiology have said that these supplements provide vitamins out of context. All of the vitamins that you find in a fruit can be found in a multivitamin tablet and then some, but certainly not all of the phytochemicals that come with the natural package. A lot of these substances are catalysts or work solely to prevent a lot of potentially harmful disorders and diseases.
“The people who are most likely to take vitamin supplements are the people who least need them,”, she says.
So.. no multivitamins?
Looking at the other end of the spectrum we also have many experts who suggest that it doesn’t harm to take these in limited quantities for the sake of being sure, which is what the health-conscious people have been doing all this time.
This is once again, up for debate, with many supporters suggesting that it’s better to have a few dollars wasted and be sure than not spending the money and requiring it later down the line if they are indeed suffering from a vitamin deficiency.
This post probably raised more questions than it answered, but the one thing that we are sure about is that vitamin supplements will help you live longer if your body actually warrants for the consumption of these pills. Taking them without it won’t have any side-effects at best, and will certainly not prolong your life as much as the healthier counterparts of these medicines will.
